Ossiculoplasty

The middle compartment of the ear has got three small bones- the malleus, incus and stapes. These bones are the smallest in the body and are arranged in the form of a chain. They are so important because it is only when they move we have a good hearing. They can become fixed or loose their continuity by infection, surgery, temporal bone fracture or by birth. In order to restore the hearing this chain has to be reconstructed by a procedure called ossiculoplasty. This can be achieved by with the help of bone or cartilage. Polymers, ceramic and metal can also be used.
